You might have heard of it and you might find it seem natural to have encountered such words. But, really, what are dental implants? What is their purpose? And lastly, what are the types of dental implants? Well, we are here to give you a few things you should know about it because, you never know, you might need one.

There are unfortunate people who, at a certain age, have lost a number of their teeth. This can be detrimental since teeth loss usually leads to biting irregularities, jaw misalignment, and crooked face structures. Hence, many people result to taking dental implants to solve or alleviate these problems.

The main purpose of getting dental implants is to replace or substitute the loss or lack of tooth roots. These are artificial tooth roots that are used to provide support or restore the missing tooth, which then helps in preventing jawbone misalignment or loss. This is, therefore, can be referred to as an example of artificial replacement.

Dental implants are helpful in a way that it helps people from not having irregularities in their bites and it also boosts their self-esteem when they eventually encountered teeth loss. With dental implants, people are able to chew properly the food that they like to eat and at the same time maintaining the right facial features.

Types of Dental Implants

There are two types of dental implants: endosteal implants and subperiosteal implants.

ENDOSTEAL IMPLANTS

This is the most common type of two-stage implants. In this kind of implant, it is put in the jawbones and serves mainly as a bridge. It is a two-stage procedure in a sense that it involves implanting in the jawbone and closing the gums at the same time.

Right after the surgery has healed, another minor surgery is conducted by simply connecting a support and impermanent restoration.

SUBPERIOSTAL IMPLANTS

This is a single stage dental implant wherein it is put on the jawbone just inside the gum tissue. It includes putting a longer implant on the jaw to be able to hold the restoration. This is mostly used to put dentures in a stable position in patients that do not have enough bone height.

Most people cannot readily have dental implants due to the fact that dental implants require healthy gums and bones. If you don’t have strong bones or healthy gums, they won’t be able to give support to the implants.

This is why you must ensure that you practice proper oral hygiene. If there are any problems when it comes to your gums and bones, these must be addressed first before proceeding to obtaining implants.

Furthermore, if you smoke a lot, you will definitely be advised to stop since you have higher risks compared to those who don’t smoke. Once your dentist no longer sees anything detrimental in your gums and bones, then you are well ready to get your dental implants.
