What Dental Veneers Can Do For You

by | Aug 26, 2021 | Uncategorized

There are many things that can take away from a lovely smile. Sometimes you will fall, sometimes you’ll eat something hard, and with these occasions usually come a chipped tooth. While things like yellowing of the teeth and cavities can be fixed fairly simply, when you chip a tooth or develop a gap between your teeth it can be a bit harder to recover.

While small chips can be fixed rather easily, larger abnormalities of the teeth and most specifically gaps require a certain type of care to hide them and make your smile as perfect as can be.

With porcelain veneers, these problems can be solved. No matter if you have a chip or gap in your tooth,  porcelain veneers can help cover it up and make for a good, even smile you will love for the rest of your life.

Commonly known as porcelain veneers or composite veneers, dental veneers are what you normally see that are used in other people’s teeth. These usually look as thin as wafers. The shells are colored or designed in a certain way to make it look like natural.

The teeth are attached to the shells in front to improve its condition. Furthermore, veneers are usually made out of two different materials such as porcelain and resin. When it comes to choosing the best materials for you, you might need to consult with your dentist first.

Veneers are used if the teeth suffer from discoloration, misalignment, or if there are any gaps between the teeth. Veneers are also helpful when your teeth are chipped or broken, uneven, or if their shapes are somewhat irregular.

So, what would you most likely want to know about when it comes to getting dental veneers? Well, if you want to know how the dental veneer procedure works, this article might help you get an overview.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

A porcelain veneer is a specially made tooth cover a dentist can attach to the front of your tooth to modify or upgrade the appearance of the tooth. They are generally made out of porcelain and are custom made to fit each individual tooth to ensure a good fit.

A veneer can attractively and easily cover up any imperfections on a tooth, including cracks, gaps, or chips. It is, however, a purely cosmetic fix so it might be difficult to convince most insurances to pay for it.

What is the Process For Getting a Porcelain Veneers?

The process to getting a veneer put in place is separated into two visits, after initially consulting with your dentist. The initial consultation will happen when you schedule a visit, and during the consultation, you will be asked questions such as your dental history (if not already on record), and what you hope to gain from veneers.

Then they will discuss the options moving forward with planning and scheduling the placement of the veneer. They will also discuss your options as far as paying for the procedure.

The first actual appointment will involve your dentist shaving off and shaping the outermost layer of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneer to fit. Due to this procedure possibly being a bit painful, you can discuss with your dentist the options for painkillers before the process happens.

Once it does happen, if the tooth is exposed too much, a temporary veneer will be placed on top of the tooth until the custom one comes in. Once the custom one comes in, it’s time for the second visit.

During the second visit, your dentist will perform some minor adjustments while forming it to your tooth. This can involve shaving a little bit off the veneer until it provides the perfect fit. After the placement of the custom veneer is perfected, cement and a light cure will bond the veneer to your tooth, making it now perfectly usable.

It is, however, always important to have follow up appointments with your Austin family dentist starting about a week after you get the veneer, to ensure proper fit and sizing, and to make sure the veneer isn’t reacting badly to your gums and tooth.
